I can’t avoid it anymore. I use ChatGPT almost as much as Midjourney in the creation of my art. But up until now it has been the silent partner. No longer. The most recent slate of updates, which brought us custom GPTs, and a host of other things has forced me to speak about it.
There are two main things I’ll talk about here: Dalle 3, and custom GPTs. Midjourney is my favorite AI program, but ChatGPT is far and away the most useful. Aside from creating art, there are so many things that need to be done: preparing the art, marketing the art, selling the art, etc. ChatGPT can help with all of these things, and you can automate most of it. Hello custom GPTs!
Even before custom GPTs hit the scene, Dalle 3 was quite the release all by itself. Its selling point is prompt accuracy, and a very close second is simplicity of use. I was a little skeptical when I saw the advertisements, but Dalle 3 is every bit of what was advertised. You can give it an entire paragraph or more of information and it does a great job of incorporating just about everything into the image. Even better, there are no prompts you can present your idea in natural language. ChatGPT will understand and create your vision. The quality isn’t quite like that of Midjourney, but there are use cases where the control is more beneficial. I for one have been using Dalle 3 to create mock-ups for art and other things. You can do this in Midjourney, of course, but it’s much easier with Dalle 3 and you have much greater control.

I upload an image and have GPT create a styled environment that complements my image!
Custom GPTs are another mind-blowing addition. At their simplest they are basically glorified custom instructions. However, these glorified custom instructions come with an 8000-character limit instead of a 1500-character limit (Things are getting interesting already)! Add to this the possibility for uploading documents as a knowledge base or having the GPT access APIs to perform various tasks and suddenly I’m paralyzed with possibilities. To be honest the API portion seems to be a little more complicated, I haven’t put it to use yet (big ideas though). I have concrete plans for the knowledge base, and the custom instructions portion – well that’s easy; got it running like a well-oiled machine.
In the near future look for more specific content revolving around using ChatGPT/Dall-E3, creatively and otherwise, in your art making process!
